Acidify the soil: Answer: acidify the soil

Dear Giorgio,

there are many soil improvers that can be added to the soil to increase its acidity, and as you well say pine bark and pine needles tend over time to increase the acidity of a soil, but consider that they must also decompose, therefore the your soil will become acid over time if you periodically add material taken from under the pines as a soil conditioner. In your case then you do not need a real acid soil, but a slightly less alkaline soil: considering that a soil with a pH around 6.5-7 is to be considered neutral, only below pH 6 a soil it is actually acidic. For this reason, consider that any product that is usually used to decrease the pH of the soil, with a good probability will tend to bring the pH of your substrate to figures close to 5, therefore for you definitely too acidic. You can try adding tiny quantities of pine needles and chopped bark, or small quantities of peat, a material that has a very low pH, which you will mix with your soil, in order to slightly moderate its alkalinity. Who grows azaleas and camellias in alkaline soils every year uses sulfur-based acidifying products, which significantly lower the pH of the soil; the packages of these products show the doses useful for acidifying an alkaline or neutral medium; using small doses of these products you can quickly lower the pH of your soil, and considering that they are powder products you can make sure that the slight drop in pH you need occurs quickly. Consider that a product of this type could be very convenient for you, as, with the passing of the months, and the regular watering with calcareous water (in most of Italy the water of the aqueduct is strongly calcareous) the your soil will tend to return to its original pH, and only with regular additions of your acidifier can you keep the pH under control. How regular then depends on various factors, do tests, it could be enough even every 3-4 months.
